Hello everyone, My name is Nicholas Lakhan, and I am a Mental Health Counselor Intern.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in psychology at the State University of New York at Oswego and am currently working towards a master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling at Niagara University. I am driven by the passion to impact society in a positive manner.
My counseling theoretical approach derives from existentialism, narrative therapy, and Adlerian therapy. These theories have an uplifting ideation, which can help a client determine their purpose while strengthening their self-awareness. I believe we all have a sole purpose in this world, and counseling may be an effective route for providing support. A favorite quote by Randy Pausch states, “We cannot change the cards we’re dealt, just how we play the hand”. We have all been brought into this reality under differing circumstances; however, we must determine how we continue to live the rest of our lives.
As an effective therapist, I may emphasize the importance of empathy and patience. I want my clients to feel comfortable speaking about their thoughts and concerns. I had personally struggled with my cultural values and family upbringing. I did not have the resources to better myself. However, I later developed the goal of helping others in a way that I wanted to be helped. I want to serve as a conduit towards mental wellness and encourage the youth community to exceed their goals. I’ve spent over 6 years working amongst the youth, and I hope to further impact society as a whole.
During my personal time, I enjoy hiking, nature walks, and running with my dog, Archie. While the opportunity to hike is scarce within New York City, I sometimes resort to staying indoors while drawing or reading a classical book. Overall, I’ve learned to find greater meaning in life’s simple moments. I’d be more than happy to discuss further and learn more about you as well!
